Palina Sharendo-Panasiuk rejoined her family after four years in jail

On February 06, 2025, the former political prisoner Palina Sharendo-Panasiuk left Belarus and met her husband and children at the Vilnius railway station. Relatives, friends and concerned Belarusians cordially welcomed her return.

On February 01, 2025, Sharendo-Panasiuk was released. In her interview to Zerkalo she shared her feelings: “It’s like rising from the dead; there was a moment when I thought I’d never leave there.”

She also expressed concern with the health condition of Victoria Kul’sha who was in penitentiary together with her. According to Sharendo-Panasiuk, Kul’sha went on a hunger strike for several months, refused to drink water, and harmed herself. She was frequently placed in punitive isolation wards and prison cells, depriving her of a chance to have some fresh air.

Sharendo-Panasiuk stressed that such detention conditions were equally applied to other political prisoners. “We were constantly kept in those torturous conditions. All the time, since autumn 2021 when we were first put in punitive isolation wards and prison cells”, quoted her Radio Svaboda.
